Special electronics components/modules used in LHCb

To build the front-end electronics of the sub-detectors special non-commercial components are in many cases needed. These components are in most cases special radiation hard/tolerant ASIC's or modules for the TFC/TTC system.

Special agreements are required for the delivery of these components to the different LHCb users, in some cases (but not all) organized by the electronics coordinator.

TTC optical receiver

The TTCrx has been qualified to work with optical receivers from Agilent and TrueLight. As the used type of optical receiver is at its end of its product lifetime and is soon obsolete, a large quantity of optical receivers from TrueLight have been purchased in common among the LHC experiments. Final quantity of 1810 (one per reserved TTCrx) have been delivered to LHCb.
Price: 11CHF.

An example of how to connect this to the TTCrx can be seen on the schematics of the TTCrq.

Be aware that the TrueLight optical receiver is not direct pin compatible with the receiver from Agilent. The TrueLight receiver has a differential output where the Agilent only have a single ended output and a pseudo differential signal must be generated with passive components.

TTC modules

More details about the TTC modules can be found via the TTC system support web page. These modules are only supplied to users by the CERN ESS group if they have been reserved beforehand Details of delivery can also be found.

For the TTCoc modules it has been discovered that the original multimode 32 fan out modules (TTCoc-MM32) can not be guaranteed to work satisfactory with the single mode high power lasers on the TTCex and TTCtx modules. It has therefore been decided that the final LHCb TTC system optical distribution will be made with a new Single Mode fan out  module (TTCoc-SM32) and single mode fibers. TTCoc-SM32 is expected available in limited quantities from mid 2005.
To replace old TTCoc-MM32 modules in existing test systems, new TTCoc-SM32 modules can be supplied from the common LHCb order when available.
