Racks

Racks in the Cavern (near the detector) :

In the cavern the racks and their equipment (turbines, low voltage power supplies, electronics, etc.) have to stand to radiation and magnetic field. This is the reason why turbine units with magnetic shields have to be installed in those racks. When the shielding parts are mounted on the turbines motors, the system works up to 1 kGauss. The rack monitoring and control electronics integrated in the turbine units is based on an ELMB and is rad. tol.

The fans have shown not to stand in a magnetic environment above 40 Gauss. In the LHCb cavern, it will not be possible to use fan trays or single fans.
Since the fan trays cannot be used, the cooling system is reduced to turbines, heat exchangers and air deflector. With such a reduced system, the total power dissipated within a rack cannot be above 4kW.
